The coal barn is just about all that remains of the once busy Thornham Harbour. During a high tide, this building stands surrounded by water in all directions making it a favourite of landscape photographers.

Unfortunately, time, the tide and the wind are starting to take their toll and the old coal barn is in need of repair.

Aldeburgh is a family favourite for a day at the coast. We love a crunch along the wide shingle beach before joining the queue for fish and chips. The sound of the waves washing over the pebble slopes is wonderfully mesmerising and if allowed to spend more than 5 minutes sitting on the warm stones, I would soon be resting my eyes.

Walk north from the carpark and queues for seal trips to the bridge leading out across the marshes. When the tide is out you will see many boats just like this one waiting for the water to return. Their rigging clanging gently in the breeze they are often surrounded by several footprints in the wellie-sucking mud. Although wonderful at any time of year, during the summer the sea-lavender brings amazing colours to the marshes.

We have all stopped to watch ribbons of rain drifting across the horizon while trying to work out which way the weather is going. Is it worth putting on a rain coat or do you need to go back to the car?

As you leave the High Street and walk down The Quay, the spectacular sight of Cley Windmill appears around the bend. Spend some time here taking in the view before heading between the buildings towards the North Norfolk Coast Path.
Meandering along the narrow track you will soon appear in the open and will be greeted with the view shown in this picture.

I have promised myself a stay in this iconic building one day and while that would be a wonderful treat, the real magic can only be seen from the outside. Cley Windmill and the surrounding area under a Norfolk sky, what more could you wish for?

Cley next the Sea is one of those places that urges you to slow down. Designed for horse and cart, the narrow streets are often congested due to the traffic along the coast road. Don’t let this put you off a visit though. Be patient and polite and everything will be fine.

Once parked you can enjoy walks along the road to one of the shops/pubs, venture right along the path to Cley Beach or left for a walk to Blakeney. Whichever way you go, the windmill provides the main focus for any photograph, drawing or painting of this remarkable place.

Blakeney was once a commercial seaport but now only small boats can make their way out along the River Glaven to the sea. This doesn’t mean Blakeney is a quiet forgotten sort of place. Far from it, in fact. It is a great location for sailors, paddle-boarders, canoeists, crabbers, walkers and bird-watchers.

I prefer walking at Blakeney in the quieter months when the days are short, the wind bracing and the thought of a Woodforde's in front of a roaring fire at the Kings Arms spurs you on

If you find yourself in this part of the world, you should take the opportunity to walk the Norfolk Coast Path alongside the River Burn from Burnham Overy Staithe out to the sand dunes.
You will see many boats like the Geoffrey George moored up or waiting in the mud for the sea to return.
If the road is busy and you need to park ‘in’ the harbour, do be mindful of the tides!

This picture shows the quieter side of Wells next the Sea. Heading down this road takes you away from the chip shops and amusements out along the Norfolk Coast Path. Although the buildings may not have changed much over the last hundred years or so, the road itself once had a railway line running down the middle of it in the days when Wells was a busy port.

On a quiet misty morning, you stand by the riverbank almost too scared to breathe. Deer wander by only yards away and water vole try their best not to spoil the mirror surface of the water as they gently glide in.

If you are lucky you may see an owl watching you from a fence post or tickling the mist with the down draft from its silently flapping wings as it hovers high above its prey.

Is there anything more British than a beach hut and does anywhere do them better than Wells-next-the-Sea? These colourful shelters stand at the top of the beach like a defiant army protecting the wood from the invading sea.

On a recent visit I saw a content lady looking up from a book as her hammock swung gently in the warm breeze from the shade under one of these beach huts. I’m not normally a jealous person but that really was too much.

In this part of the coast you really do feel like you’re teetering on the edge of the world. There are few variations in height as you sweep your eyes around the horizon so the sky seems to completely surround you. Although the beach is vast at low tide it is quickly consumed by the incoming sea.

Popular on Sunny days but more enjoyable on those cooler days when a jumper is essential and a flask of tea in the dunes is a real treat.

Happisburgh is a fascinating place of historical importance whose future is slowly being eroded by North Sea storms.

Roads end abruptly at the cliff top while from the beach you can see the scars of collapsed foundations and underground pipes. Standing proudly above all of this is the red and white banded tower of the Happisburgh Lighthouse. Built in 1790, this 85 ft guardian of our coast watches with increasing concern over the sea’s steady advance.
